What does drain cleaning cost, and when can I do it myself?

A slow sink is a ten-minute job; a clog past the trap or a backed-up main line is a plumber with a machine. Here is the line between them.

Hire a pro

$150 to $500

Typical national range, done by a licensed plumber. Local labor rates move this up or down by a third.

Do it yourself

Not recommended

This is licensed or specialized work. The savings are in choosing the right pro and a fair quote.

Do I need a pro?

Sometimes yourself, sometimes a pro

A slow bathroom sink or tub is usually hair at the stopper: pull the stopper, clear it, done. A kitchen sink that is fully clogged, water backing up in more than one fixture, or gurgling toilets means the clog is past where a plunger or hand snake reaches, and a plumber's machine is the right tool. Skip chemical drain cleaners; they damage pipes and make the plumber's job dangerous.

Why it costs what it costs

  • A single-fixture snake is a short visit. A main sewer line cable job costs more, and a camera inspection adds to it.
  • Hydro-jetting costs more than cabling and is for grease and roots, not a hair clog.
  • After hours and weekend calls carry a premium. A slow drain can wait for a weekday.

When to stop and call someone

  • More than one drain is slow or backing up at the same time.
  • Sewage smell, or water coming up in a tub or floor drain when you flush.
  • Repeated clogs in the same line: ask for a camera inspection to find the cause.

Questions people ask

Is a chemical drain cleaner safe to use?
No. It rarely clears a real clog, it corrodes older pipes, and it can burn the plumber who opens the line next. A plunger, a hand snake, or a pro.
What is the difference between snaking and hydro-jetting?
A cable punches a hole through the clog. Jetting scours the whole pipe with high-pressure water, which is the fix for grease and roots. Most household clogs only need a cable.
How do I keep drains clear?
A drain screen in every tub and sink, no grease down the kitchen sink, and a monthly flush with hot water.
