What does it cost to replace smoke detectors, and do I need an electrician?

Smoke alarms expire after 10 years. Battery units are a ten-minute swap; hardwired ones are usually a plug-in swap too, as long as you buy the matching base.

Hire a pro

$225 to $650

Typical national range, done by a handyman or the relevant trade.

Do it yourself

$20 to $50

Parts only, easy difficulty, about 10 to 20 minutes. Tools: drill, screwdriver, step ladder.

Do I need a pro?

You can do this yourself

For most homes this is a do-it-yourself job. Battery alarms twist off and a new one twists on. Hardwired alarms have a plug on a short pigtail: turn off the breaker, unplug the old alarm, plug in a new one from the same brand family, and twist it onto the base. The one time to call an electrician is when you want to add a hardwired alarm where there is no wiring, or the existing wiring looks damaged. If you do hire it out, a handyman or an electrician is the right trade, not a security-camera installer.

Why it costs what it costs

  • The alarms are most of the cost. A dual smoke and carbon monoxide alarm with a sealed 10-year battery costs more per unit but needs no battery changes.
  • A pro visit is a trip charge plus a few minutes per alarm; the price per alarm drops when they do the whole house.

When to stop and call someone

  • You want hardwired, interconnected alarms where there are none today.
  • Wiring at the base looks melted, brittle or loose.
  • Ceilings are too high to reach safely from a step ladder.

What would it cost at your house?

Questions people ask

How do I know if my smoke alarm is expired?
The manufacture date is printed on the back. Replace at 10 years, or sooner if it chirps with a fresh battery.
Why does my smoke alarm chirp with a new battery?
Usually the alarm itself is at end of life, or dust in the sensor. Replace the unit if cleaning does not help.
Where should smoke alarms go?
Inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level including the basement. Carbon monoxide alarms near sleeping areas and on each level if you have gas appliances or an attached garage.
