What does it cost to replace an HVAC system?

The biggest single bill most homeowners face. Here is the range, what moves it, and the questions that keep a quote honest.

Hire a pro

$8,333 to $16,667

Typical national range, done by a licensed HVAC contractor. Local labor rates move this up or down by a third.

Do it yourself

Not recommended

This is licensed or specialized work. The savings are in choosing the right pro and a fair quote.

Call a pro

This is licensed work: refrigerant handling, gas lines, electrical and permits. Your job is the decision, not the installation. Get three written quotes, make sure each one sizes the system from a load calculation rather than the old unit's label, and ask what the price includes (permit, disposal, thermostat, duct sealing).

Why it costs what it costs

  • Equipment is roughly half the bill; the other half is skilled labor, permits, and anything the ductwork or electrical needs to accept the new unit.
  • Efficiency ratings, variable-speed blowers and heat pumps cost more up front and less to run. A good quote shows the operating cost difference.
  • Prices swing by region and by season. Replacing in spring or fall, before the rush, often costs less.

When to stop and call someone

  • Any time a system is 15 years or older and needs a repair over a few hundred dollars.
  • A cracked heat exchanger on a furnace is a replace, not a repair.
  • Rooms that never get comfortable: the fix may be ductwork, not a bigger unit. Ask for a load calculation.

Questions people ask

Should I replace the furnace and air conditioner at the same time?
If both are near the end of life, yes: one install, one crew, and matched equipment runs more efficiently. If one is new, replace only the failed one.
Is a heat pump a good replacement for a furnace?
In most of the country a modern cold-climate heat pump heats well into single digits and cools in summer, often on one system. Ask for an operating-cost comparison for your climate and fuel prices.
What rebates exist?
Utility rebates for high-efficiency equipment are common and change often. Ask each bidder which ones they file for you.
